A Galaxy is a large system of stars, gas, and dust. Planets and other material orbit these stars in a galaxy. The galaxy has at least a million of stars.Stars are formed in the vast interstellar. Sun is one of the stars in the galaxy known as the Milky Way. A galaxy is also known as a nebula.

Spiral Galaxies


The most common known galaxy is the spiral galaxy. Face-on-spiral is when you can see the galaxy clearly. Edge-on-spiral is if you see the galaxy from its side. The Spiral Galaxy has arms that are wound tightly. 77% of the galaxies that are observed are spiral galaxies. The Milky Way would be known as a spiral Galaxy. Gases and dust is what the arms of the spiral galaxy consists of.

Elliptical Galaxy


There shape is how they got their name,Circular to narrow shapes.The smallest Elliptical Galaxy is less than one-tenth of the Milky Way. There is very little gas and dust in an Elliptical Galaxy. Most stars in the Elliptical Galaxy are old and red. This Galaxy has a smooth appearance.Giant Elliptical's can contain over ten trillion masses in the forms of stars. Dwarf Elliptical's can be less than ten million masses that is in the forms of stars. The shape of the elliptical is shaped like a hamburger bun.

Irregular galaxy


Irregular galaxy is an uncommon kind of galaxy. Irregular galaxies were once like a spiral but over time it has changed. 3% of the galaxy are different. These galaxies are usually found in many clusters. Some of these astronomers can't figure out why they look so strange.Some stars in this have energetic gas bubbles that make this type of galaxy look like it has globs. Irr would be one of the most common of the irregular galaxies.

Lenticular Galaxies



This type of galaxy is sometimes called an "armless spiral galaxy". Sometimes these have a bar in the middle as the one shown bellow. This galaxy mainly consist of mainly stars. The stars that are in this galaxy are mainly smooth stars. This would be a disk shape. Sometimes it is hard to tell this kind of galaxy with the elliptical galaxy. The Lenticular Galaxy is a central bulge and disk but lacking spiral arms. Dust in the Lenticular galaxy is mainly toward the nucleus.

Hubble Tuning Fork


In the 1920's Edwin Hubble classified this as the Hubble Tuning Fork in 1926. The elliptical galaxy is what makes up the handle of the Hubble tuning fork. A Hubble tuning fork in divided into three categories-Elliptical, Lenticular's and Spiral.



Colliding Galaxies and Antennae Galaxies.


A colliding galaxy is two spiral galaxies when they join together. Another name for a colliding galaxy is a Antennae galaxy. These are the closest known merging galaxies. The distance is about 65 million light-years. What is an light-year? A light year is a distance from about 9,500,000,000,000 kilometers per one light year. Gas and dust are what makes up these galaxies. This is a cluster of stars. In a colliding galaxy the stars collide past each other and that is how they get the name colliding galaxy.

The Milky Way is one of the most well know parts of the Galaxy. The diameter of the Milky way is 100,000 light years. There are about 400 billion stars in the Milky Way. The thickness of Milky Way is 1,000 light years. The oldest star in the Milky Way is about 13.2 billion years old.
