Hurricane Katrina was one of the deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history. It was classified as the sixth strongest hurricane recorded.About 90,000 square miles were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina's winds got up to 140 miles per hour. This hurricane killed over 1800 people and thousands were left unemployed. The U.S. spent about $81.2 billion to repair the damages.This is the most costly hurricane in Earth's history. Almost 80% of New Orleans was under water and in some places the water was up to 20 feet. More than 70 countries helped with donations to help with the cost of damages. On August 23, 2005 Hurricane Katrina formed over the Bahamas. Then crossed southern Florida was just a category one. Then it strengthened over the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Katrina affected all of the following areas: the Bahamas, South Florida, Louisiana, Cuba, Greater New Orleans(especially), Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida Panhandle.This was the sixth strongest hurricane ever measured in pressure in the Atlantic basin. Hurricane Katrina was the third strongest hurricane ever to make the U.S. landfall.

The Time Line

The formation of Hurricane Katrina was on Tuesday, August 23, 2005. The first landfall was on Florida at about 6:30 pm, on Thursday, August 25, 2005.When it got to Florida it was only at a Category 1 near Hallandale Beach and Aventura. Katrina started going left or south heading up to Miami. At this time as many as six people were killed including three being crushed by trees. The next day Friday August 26 2005 at 1:00 am Katrina's winds reached to 70 mph winds. Than at about 5:00 am the eye of Hurricane Katrina was right off of the shore of Florida.After this the winds reached 75 mph. By 11:00 pm that National Hurricane Center predicted that Hurricane Katrina would hit Buras-Triumph, Louisiana


The Formation

Hurricane Katrina became a hurricane two hours before making it to land between Hallandale Beach and Aventura, Florida. The storm weakened over land but then regained its force about an hour later after reaching the Gulf of Mexico. After entering it started to grow and became a Category 3 Hurricane then turning right into a 5 Category Hurricane in just nine hours. On August 28th at about one o'clock it had winds at about one hundred and seventy five miles per hour and a minimum central pressure of 902 m bar.Hurricane Katrina made its second landfall at about 6:10 a.m. on Monday August 29. It landed in Buras-Triumph, Louisiana. When it got there it was a Category 3 with winds up to 125 mph.The confirmed deaths is 1,836 mainly in Louisiana and 1,577 from Mississippi. About 135 people remain missing in Louisiana
